Grayan-et-l'Hôpital sits at the northern tip of the Médoc peninsula, where the road essentially runs out and the Atlantic dunes take over. It's a remote, wind-scoured corner of Gironde — pine forests, oyster beds in the estuary, and long stretches of coast that see more surfers than tourists. Golf here means playing in real ocean air, with the kind of light and mood that shifts dramatically between morning and afternoon.
Balata Golf Practice is a training and practice facility rather than a full course, making it a practical resource in a part of the Médoc that is otherwise not heavily served by golf infrastructure. The great wine-country courses — Golf du Médoc, Golf de Lacanau — are a reasonable drive south, and a facility like this fills a genuine gap for locals, holidaymakers in the coastal campsites, and anyone warming up before a longer session elsewhere.
For visitors to this remote Atlantic fringe, Balata offers an honest, no-frills entry point to the game in a setting that more than makes up for what the facility lacks in scale.
