Vopnafjörður is one of Iceland's more remote fjord communities, tucked into the northeast corner of the country where the Eastfjords give way to open Atlantic exposure. The landscape here is raw and elemental — steep hillsides dropping to cold water, winds that shift without warning, and light that in midsummer barely fades at all. Golf in this part of Iceland is genuinely community-driven, existing less as a leisure industry and more as a local tradition that feels improbable and charming in equal measure.
Skálavöllur is the home course of the Vopnafjörður golf club, and like many Icelandic rural layouts it occupies terrain that was never groomed with golf in mind. That honesty is part of the appeal — fairways shaped by the land rather than imposed upon it, greens that reflect real local conditions, and a playing environment where weather is a genuine factor in every round.
Playing here means experiencing Icelandic golf in one of its most unfiltered forms. No resort polish, no crowds — just a short drive from a working fishing village, a course that locals built and maintain with genuine pride.
