Cambridge sits at a geographic crossroads that shapes everything about playing golf here — the flat, wide skies of East Anglia meeting the gentle chalk ridge of the Gog Magog Hills on the city's southern edge. Wandlebury takes its name from the ancient Iron Age hillfort that crowns this ridge, and the surrounding country park is one of the more distinctive pieces of landscape within reach of the city. That elevated, open ground is a rarity in a county defined by fens and river meadows, and it lends the area a character quite different from the pancake-flat courses that dominate Cambridgeshire golf.
The Gog Magog Golf Club, which occupies this ground, is one of the oldest and most respected clubs in the east of England, though Wandlebury is the name attached to its second, shorter course — a layout designed to offer a slightly different test from the famous Old Course next door.
Cambridge itself is not a golf destination in the conventional sense, but the university city draws a knowing, competitive membership culture. Playing here means golf with genuine history underfoot and a skyline where ancient earthworks and beech canopy frame every round.
