Few venues in Irish golf have risen as quickly or as visibly as Galgorm Castle. Designed by Simon Gidman and opened in 1997 on the grounds of the 17th-century Galgorm Castle estate outside Ballymena, the course follows the River Maine through mature parkland that gives it genuine grandeur. It hosted the Irish Open in 2020 and 2021 — both staged behind closed doors during the pandemic — and those European Tour appearances confirmed what club members already knew: this is a course that can test the best.
The layout weaves between ancient trees and open meadow ground, with the river coming into play on several holes and demanding both accuracy and nerve. The par-70 configuration means birdie opportunities exist, but the course defends itself well through strategic bunkering and the constant presence of water. It plays longer and more demanding than a first glance at the card suggests.
Ballymena sits in County Antrim, roughly midway between Belfast and the Causeway Coast, making Galgorm a natural stop for anyone touring Northern Ireland's remarkably rich golf corridor. The castle itself looms over the property, lending the round a sense of occasion that's hard to replicate on newer, more anonymous layouts.
