Bald Head Island is one of the more unusual addresses in American golf — a barrier island off the coast of Brunswick County, North Carolina, accessible only by ferry from Southport. No cars are allowed on the island, which means arriving at the club feels genuinely apart from the mainland world. The landscape is shaped by maritime forest, salt marsh, and the Atlantic shoreline, with the kind of light and wind that remind you constantly that you're playing at the edge of the sea.
The course occupies terrain that barrier islands do particularly well: low-lying, exposed, and subject to the coastal breezes that can make any given hole play entirely differently hole to hole, or round to round. That wind is the real architect here, turning a manageable layout into something that demands creative shot-making and course management rather than raw power.
Bald Head Island Country Club serves a small, tight-knit community of island residents and their guests, giving it the atmosphere of a private retreat rather than a destination resort — golf as a daily privilege, unhurried and largely undiscovered by the outside world.
