Phuket Country Club holds a genuine place in Thai golf history as one of the island's original courses, opening in the late 1980s when Phuket was just beginning its transformation into an international resort destination. Laid out across the hilly interior of Kathu district — well away from the beaches that draw most visitors — the course works with the natural contours of a valley and surrounding rubber-tree plantations, giving it a lush, enclosed character that feels distinct from the more manicured resort layouts that followed elsewhere on the island.
The terrain is the defining feature here. Significant elevation changes, tight tree-lined fairways, and several holes that demand precise shot placement rather than raw power make this a more tactical test than its resort neighbors. Caddies are very much part of the experience and carry genuine local knowledge worth listening to.
Kathu sits in Phuket's cooler, greener interior, and the course benefits from that microclimate — it plays well year-round, though the shoulder months between the wet and dry seasons can bring soft conditions. For visiting golfers wanting something with history and personality beyond the resort circuit, this is a worthwhile stop.
