Long before THE PLAYERS Championship made Ponte Vedra Beach synonymous with Tour-level golf, Sawgrass Country Club was already the area's established address for serious play. Founded in the early 1970s and designed by Ed Seay — a longtime Arnold Palmer associate — the club predates the nearby Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass and quietly holds its own as one of the original anchors of what has become one of the most golf-saturated zip codes in America. The membership has watched a world-class tournament infrastructure grow up essentially in their backyard, yet the club retains its own identity as a genuine private retreat rather than a showcase venue.
The layout moves through the coastal lowlands and marshes characteristic of this stretch of northeast Florida, where saltwater wetlands press against the fairways and the flat terrain rewards precision over power. Wind off the Atlantic adds a variable the scorecard never fully captures.
For those fortunate enough to play it, Sawgrass Country Club offers something the famous neighbors cannot always provide — a round in unhurried privacy, among members who chose this place for the golf itself.
