Few links courses in the British Isles carry Castletown's combination of pedigree and raw coastal exposure. Laid out along the rocky southern tip of the Isle of Man, the course occupies a narrow limestone peninsula jutting into the Irish Sea, where the wind is less a factor than a co-designer. Old Tom Morris shaped the original layout in the 1890s, and the land has changed remarkably little since — a rare continuity that makes Castletown feel genuinely ancient rather than manufactured.
The holes trace the edge of the peninsula with the sea visible from virtually every tee and green. The routing demands constant reckoning with wind direction, and the firm, fast turf rewards the low, running game that links golf has always prized. Several holes play directly along the shoreline cliffs, where a wayward shot doesn't just cost a stroke — it disappears entirely.
The Isle of Man sits in the middle of the Irish Sea, equidistant from England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales, and Castletown distills something essential from all of that surrounding golf culture. It remains a proper members' club with a genuine local identity, not a resort showpiece — discovered mostly by those willing to make the journey by ferry or small plane.
