Few municipal courses in New England have earned the kind of national attention Richter Park has. Opened in 1971 and designed by Edward Ryder, the course quickly built a reputation that punched well above its public-access status, landing on numerous "best public courses" lists over the decades and drawing players from well beyond Fairfield County. It sits on land that rolls with genuine purpose, using the natural topography of western Connecticut to create a layout that demands patience and shot-making rather than raw power.
The course plays through a landscape of mature hardwoods and open hillsides, with elevation changes that produce memorable views and uneven lies that keep even experienced players honest. Several holes along the back nine are particularly demanding, routing around the contours of Richter Park itself in ways that make the setting feel less like a municipal and more like a private club that happened to leave its gates open.
Danbury sits in the Housatonic Valley near the New York border, giving Richter Park a broad catchment of metropolitan golfers who know a serious test when they find one. Tee times here are worth planning ahead.
