Mesquite Grove Golf Course sits on Dyess Air Force Base, the heavy-lift wing installation on the western edge of Abilene that has been home to B-1B Lancer crews since the 1980s. Like many military courses across the country, it exists to serve the base community — active-duty personnel, their families, retirees, and authorized guests — offering a recreational outlet that civilian golfers rarely get to experience. That mission shapes everything about the atmosphere: relaxed, unpretentious, and genuinely community-minded.
Abilene sits in the southern reaches of the Rolling Plains, where the landscape opens wide and the wind rarely takes a day off. Mesquite scrub and caliche flats define the terrain here, and the course's name says exactly what you're walking into — a West Texas setting with low, gnarled trees and big sky in every direction. That persistent breeze off the plains means a par-72 layout plays differently on any given afternoon than the card suggests.
For golfers stationed at or visiting Dyess, the course provides something genuinely valuable: a place to decompress, compete informally, and stay connected to the game without leaving the installation. That combination of convenience, community, and honest West Texas character makes it a practical and meaningful part of life on base.
