Pottawattamie County sits in the Missouri River bluffs of southwestern Iowa, where the land rolls and pitches in ways that make for genuinely interesting golf terrain. Avoca itself is a small agricultural community along Interstate 80, roughly halfway between Council Bluffs and Des Moines — the kind of place where a municipal course serves as a genuine community anchor rather than a destination amenity.
Municipal golf in small-town Iowa carries its own distinct character. These courses tend to reward local knowledge, with ground conditions and turf that shift noticeably with the seasons, and a casual, unpretentious atmosphere that welcomes everyone from serious regulars to kids picking up the game for the first time.
