Aphrodite Hills Golf

Few Mediterranean golf destinations carry the dramatic sense of arrival that Aphrodite Hills does. The resort course sits on a clifftop plateau above the sea near Kouklia, and the terrain drops away sharply into a ravine that cuts through the layout — most memorably on the par-3 hole that plays across the void to a green perched above the coastline. That hole alone has made the course one of the most photographed in Europe, and the views toward the Akrotiri Bay and across to the Mediterranean horizon are genuinely distracting in the best possible way.

The course was designed by Cabell Robinson and opened in 2000 as the centrepiece of the Aphrodite Hills Resort. Robinson routed the layout sympathetically across the natural limestone ridges and valleys, and the olive trees, carob, and indigenous scrub that frame the fairways give it an unmistakably Cypriot character rather than a generic resort feel.

The wider setting adds its own layer of meaning. Kouklia is the site of ancient Palaepaphos, the original sanctuary of Aphrodite, making this one of the few places you can play golf within reach of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Paphos itself is a compact, unpretentious coastal city with a growing reputation as a year-round golf destination — the climate rarely discourages a round.
