Few courses in the Surrey commuter belt carry the quiet prestige of Pyrford Golf Club. Designed by Peter Alliss and Clive Clark and opened in 1993, it was built across the water meadows of the River Wey, and that riparian setting defines everything about how the course looks and plays. Water comes into play on the majority of holes, the fairways are wide and inviting off the tee, but misjudge your approach and you'll find yourself dropping balls into the Wey's network of channels and ponds. It's a course that rewards patience and course management over raw power.
Woking and its surrounding villages represent one of England's most concentrated pockets of heathland golf. Woking Golf Club itself dates to 1893, and courses like West Hill, Worplesdon, and Hankley Common are all within a short drive. Pyrford occupies a different ecological niche than those sandy heathland layouts — its lush, low-lying meadows feel almost like a parkland course in character.
The club has a sociable, accessible reputation and plays well for a broad range of handicaps. Visitors regularly find it more strategically interesting than its friendly presentation suggests on first arrival.
