Oporto Golf Club

Few golf clubs in continental Europe carry the historical weight of Oporto Golf Club. Founded in 1890 by British port wine merchants and textile workers who had settled in northern Portugal, it stands as the oldest golf club on the Iberian Peninsula — a distinction that gives it a quiet authority shared by very few courses on the continent. The club's origins are inseparable from the Anglo-Portuguese community that shaped the Douro Valley's wine trade, and that sense of genteel, old-world membership still flavors the atmosphere today.

The course occupies a compact stretch of linksland along the Atlantic coast near Espinho, roughly 15 kilometers south of Porto. The terrain is naturally suited to golf — sandy soil, sea breezes off the ocean, and the kind of firm, running turf that rewards ground game as much as aerial precision.
