Few heathland courses in England carry the quiet authority that North Hants does. Founded in 1904, the club occupies a stretch of classic Surrey-Hampshire border heath — sandy soil, heather, silver birch, and Scots pine framing nearly every hole. The course was laid out by James Braid, the five-time Open champion who became one of Edwardian golf's most prolific architects, and it remains one of his more underappreciated designs. Fleet, the town it calls home, sits in a part of Hampshire where the heathland belt that produced Sunningdale, Woking, and Camberley Heath extends westward, and North Hants belongs firmly in that distinguished company.
The par of 69 reflects a layout that rewards precision and course management over raw power. Braid's routing uses the natural contours of the heath rather than fighting them, with firm, fast-running turf that rewards the ground game and punishes anything offline into the heather.
This is a members' club with a traditional feel — unhurried, well-maintained, and serious about its golf. Visitors who make the trip tend to leave wondering why the course doesn't appear on more heathland itineraries.
