Joint Base Lewis-McChord sits at the southern end of Puget Sound, where the Pacific Northwest's signature mix of towering Douglas firs, volcanic mountain views, and persistent maritime weather shapes everything — including how golf is played. Whispering Firs is a military installation course serving the active-duty personnel, retirees, and authorized civilians of one of the largest Army-Air Force joint bases in the country, and the setting alone makes for a distinctive round. When the clouds part, Mount Rainier dominates the eastern skyline in a way few golf backdrops anywhere can match.
Courses on military installations tend to be unpretentious and functional by design, but they often surprise first-time visitors with how seriously the members take their golf. The Pacific Northwest military community has a deep recreational culture, and base courses here are genuinely played and genuinely cared for.
The firs the course is named for are no decorative flourish — trees of this size define corridors, punish wayward shots, and keep things cool and shaded well into summer afternoons. Expect soft turf for much of the year and the kind of quiet that a working base's tree cover tends to preserve.
