Few municipal courses in America carry the weight of history that Memorial Park does. The Houston city layout traces its roots to the 1930s, but its modern chapter is defined by a landmark restoration and redesign completed in 2020 by Tom Doak — one of the most respected names in contemporary golf architecture. The project, backed by the Astros Golf Foundation, transformed a worn everyday track into a course that genuine golf enthusiasts make a point of seeking out, and it quickly earned national attention and serious rankings consideration as one of the best public courses in the country.
Doak's work leaned into the subtle, rolling topography of the 1,500-acre Memorial Park, exposing sandy soil, restoring native grasses, and creating firm, fast conditions rarely found on a municipal layout. The result plays with a links-adjacent character that feels almost surprising in the middle of Houston.
The city itself is flat, sprawling, and perpetually humid — a Gulf Coast climate that means golf year-round, even if summer rounds demand an early tee time.
