Few golf clubs in Southeast Asia carry the living history of Chiang Mai Gymkhana. Founded in 1898 by British colonial officials and expatriate merchants, it stands as one of the oldest sporting clubs in Thailand — a relic of the teak trade era when the north was a distinctly separate world from Bangkok. The club originally served as a social hub for the foreign community that shaped early Chiang Mai, and golf was part of a broader program of sport and society that gave the Gymkhana its name.

The course itself sits close to the heart of the old city, an increasingly rare thing as Chiang Mai has grown into a modern regional capital. Playing here means navigating mature trees, tight fairways, and the kind of intimate, unhurried atmosphere that a century-plus of membership culture produces. It is a members' world, with access restricted accordingly.

Chiang Mai's climate — cool and clear from November through February, humid in the monsoon months — frames the experience. The surrounding mountains of the Ping River valley are never far from view, giving even a routine round a sense of place that newer, purpose-built courses in the region can't quite manufacture.
