Waterloo's Gates Park Golf Course has been a fixture of the city's public golf landscape for decades, operating as a municipally accessible layout within the broader Gates Park recreational complex on the city's west side. Like many Midwestern municipal courses, it exists to serve everyday golfers — the regulars who walk it twice a week, the beginners learning the game, the retirees who've memorized every slope and break.
The setting is quintessential northeast Iowa: relatively flat to gently rolling terrain shaped by the Cedar River valley, with the kind of mature tree canopy that turns a simple fairway into a corridor of shade in summer. Waterloo sits in the heart of Iowa's agricultural belt, and that unpretentious, hardworking character carries over to the golf here — nothing showy, just honest ground to play on.
At par 72 across 18 holes, Gates Park offers a complete round without pretension. It's the sort of course where you show up, pay a modest green fee, and focus on the game itself rather than the experience of being there.
