Few stretches of the Spanish Mediterranean coast pack in as many courses as the Costa del Sol, and Calanova sits comfortably among the better-regarded layouts in the Mijas municipality — a stretch of coastline that has quietly become one of Europe's densest concentrations of resort and residential golf. The course was designed by José María Olazábal, the Basque legend and 2-time Masters champion, which gives it a pedigree unusual for a course of this accessible, everyday character. His hand is visible in the sculpted bunkering and the way elevation changes are used to create variety without becoming punishing.
The setting rewards a look up from the fairway. The terrain rolls across the Mijas hills with the Sierra de Mijas as a backdrop and genuine sea views toward the Mediterranean below — the visual payoff that draws golfers to this part of Andalusia in the first place. The climate means the course plays year-round, and the combination of sun, sea views, and warm conditions makes for an experience that the scorecard cannot quantify.
Calanova plays as a welcoming, well-maintained facility that suits visitors and Costa del Sol residents alike. It is not an intimidating test, but it rewards thoughtful shot-making, and Olazábal's routing ensures that even casual rounds have moments of genuine interest.
