Hartford's Keney Golf Course carries one of the longer histories in Connecticut public golf — the course dates to 1927 and sits within Keney Park, a sprawling 693-acre urban green space on the city's north side that was itself established in the late 19th century as part of Hartford's ambitious parks movement. That civic ambition is still visible in the landscape: mature hardwoods line the fairways, and the terrain rolls in the way that old New England parkland tends to — organically, without the manufactured drama of a resort layout. It plays as a genuine neighborhood course, accessible and unpretentious.
The par-70 layout rewards placement over power, with tree-lined corridors that punish wayward drives more than the yardage alone might suggest. For players who know Hartford golf, Keney occupies a particular place — it's where generations of city residents have learned the game and kept coming back.
Connecticut's fall season transforms courses like this one. When the canopy turns in October, Keney plays through some of the most naturally beautiful conditions public golf in New England can offer.
