Few private clubs in Northern California inspire as much quiet reverence as Mayacama. Laid across the volcanic ridges and wooded draws of the Mayacamas Mountains northeast of Santa Rosa, Jack Nicklaus's design here feels less constructed than discovered — as if the routing simply revealed itself from the rugged terrain. The course opened in 2001 and has become one of the most celebrated private retreats in American golf, a place where the membership is deliberately small and the experience deliberately unhurried.
At 6,758 yards from the tips, the yardage alone won't intimidate you. The 73.9 rating and slope of 152 will. Elevation change is constant, sidehill lies are the norm rather than the exception, and Nicklaus never lets you settle into a rhythm without asking a genuinely hard question. The ball reacts differently up here — thinner air, firm volcanic soil, surfaces that can be unforgiving when approached from the wrong angle.
The setting is distinctly Sonoma County wine country: coast live oaks, manzanita, and madrone draped across steep hillsides, with views that open dramatically across the valley on clear days. It's a course that rewards the observant player, one who reads the land before reading the yardage book.
Mayacama isn't trying to impress anyone. That confidence is most of its appeal.
