Few golf clubs in New Zealand carry the institutional weight of Manawatu Golf Club. Founded in 1893, it ranks among the country's oldest, and its course in Palmerston North has long been regarded as one of the stronger inland tests in the lower North Island. The layout sits on flat to gently rolling terrain typical of the Manawatu plain, but the design — refined over more than a century — creates genuine strategic interest through tree-lined fairways, well-placed bunkers, and greens that reward accurate approach play over brute force.
Palmerston North is a university city with a confident regional identity, and the golf club reflects that character: serious about its golf, community-rooted, and well-maintained. The Manawatu region's climate brings reliable wind off the surrounding ranges, which adds an honest layer of difficulty that the scorecard alone won't warn you about.
For visiting golfers, this is a proper members' club with real history behind it — the kind of course where the golf feels earned and the standard of the layout justifies the detour inland.
