One of the more unusual addresses in American golf, Gibson Island Club occupies a private, gated island in the Chesapeake Bay, accessible only by a guarded causeway. The island itself is a residential community of old-money discretion, and the golf course reflects that spirit entirely — understated, intimate, and not remotely interested in drawing attention to itself. Seth Raynor designed the layout in the early 1920s, and his fingerprints remain visible in the bold, geometric green complexes and strategic bunkering that define his best work.
At par 69, this is not a course trying to overpower anyone. Raynor worked with what the island's topography offered, and the result is a compact, thoughtful routing where positioning and short-game craft matter far more than distance. Playing alongside tidal marshes and with water views that open onto the Bay, the atmosphere is genuinely singular — unhurried, salt-aired, and removed from the outside world in a way few clubs can claim.
For a certain kind of golfer, a round here represents something rare: a Raynor design that remains largely intact, on a piece of land that feels utterly apart from mainland life.
