Few private clubs in the American South command the kind of reverence that Wade Hampton does. Designed by Tom Fazio and opened in 1987, it consistently ranks among the top courses in the United States — Golf Digest and Golf Magazine have both placed it inside the country's top 10 at various points — and it remains one of Fazio's most celebrated designs. The routing moves through a high-elevation mountain valley in the southern Blue Ridge, where the air is noticeably cooler than the Carolina lowlands and the scenery is genuinely dramatic.
Cashiers sits at roughly 3,500 feet in the Nantahala region of western North Carolina, a summer retreat for generations of families from Charlotte, Atlanta, and beyond. The course plays through mature hardwoods and across Whiteside Cove, with meadows, rock outcroppings, and the surrounding ridgelines constantly in view. It is a walking course — carts are not permitted — which shapes the entire pace and feel of a round.
Membership is extremely limited and access is tightly controlled, so most golfers encounter Wade Hampton only by reputation. That reputation, earned over nearly 4 decades, is as strong as ever.
