Few courses in the southwest of England enjoy a setting quite like Churston's. Perched on the South Devon coast between Brixham and Dartmouth, the course sits on the edge of one of the most dramatically beautiful stretches of the English Riviera, where the land rises and folds toward red-clay cliffs and the English Channel glints in the distance on clear days. The surrounding area — the fishing port of Brixham on one side, the wooded Dart estuary on the other — gives the whole experience a distinctly coastal Devon flavour that feels a long way from the manicured uniformity of modern golf design.
Churston is an old-fashioned, unpretentious members' club course, the kind where the golf earns its character from the terrain rather than from architectural theatrics. The turf plays firm and true in summer, and the sea breezes that sweep in off Torbay have a habit of turning a straightforward club selection into something altogether less certain.
Par 70 means the card skews toward shorter, tighter holes where precision matters more than power — a format that rewards local knowledge and punishes anyone who arrives expecting to overpower their way around.
