Few public courses in the Pacific Northwest carry the reputation Gold Mountain does. The Olympic Course — the layout that draws most of the attention — was designed by John Harbottle III and opened in 1996, quickly earning a place among the best public tracks in Washington State. It has hosted U.S. Amateur qualifying and USGA events, and Golf Digest has ranked it among the top public courses in the country, a rare distinction for a municipal operation run by the City of Bremerton.
The course plays through dense second-growth forest on the Kitsap Peninsula, with significant elevation changes, doglegs that demand course management, and greens that reward precision over power. It is a genuine test — long enough to challenge low handicappers but interesting enough that the average player comes away with a clear sense of what the designer intended.
Bremerton sits across Puget Sound from Seattle, a short ferry ride from the city but very much its own place. The surrounding landscape is quintessential western Washington: towering conifers, persistent moisture, and a green so deep it borders on theatrical.
