Picacho Hills Country Club has served as Las Cruces's premier private club for decades, occupying high ground on the western edge of the city where the Chihuahuan Desert meets the foothills of the Organ Mountains. The course's elevation and open terrain put the Organs on full display — a jagged, dramatic ridgeline that forms one of southern New Mexico's most striking backdrops. At roughly 4,000 feet above sea level, the thin air adds meaningful distance to every shot, a welcome perk that desert golfers learn to count on.
The layout plays through classic Chihuahuan Desert conditions: firm, sun-baked turf, persistent wind off the Rio Grande valley floor, and the kind of wide-open sky that makes a bad round easier to forgive. Palo verde, mesquite, and desert scrub frame the holes rather than trees you'd find in wetter climates, keeping sightlines long and the atmosphere distinctly southwestern.
As a members-only club, Picacho Hills sustains a close-knit golf community in a region where private facilities are few. For Las Cruces residents who play here regularly, it functions as a genuine social anchor — the kind of club where members know each other's games as well as their names.
