Few public golf courses in the Great Plains carry the kind of backstory Firekeeper does. Built on land belonging to the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation and opened in 2000, the course was designed by Jeff Brauer — a prolific architect whose work consistently draws out the natural drama of whatever landscape he's given. Here, he had plenty to work with: rolling tallgrass prairie, mature woodlands, and the kind of wide-open Kansas sky that makes every hole feel exposed in the best possible way. Firekeeper earned immediate national attention, drawing rankings from Golf Digest and others that placed it among the best public courses in the state.
The design moves through distinct terrain — open, wind-swept stretches give way to tighter, tree-lined corridors — and the Prairie Band Casino & Resort connection means the facility is well-maintained and built for destination play, not just local rounds.
Mayetta sits about 15 miles north of Topeka, so this is genuinely accessible golf with serious architecture behind it. Wind is a constant factor in this part of Kansas, which means the course plays differently almost every time out.
