Prince William County's only public 18-hole course, Forest Greens opened in 2003 and was designed by Tom Clark, a Maryland-based architect responsible for a number of well-regarded public layouts across the mid-Atlantic. The course was built on the site of a former tree farm, and that heritage shows — mature pines line virtually every hole, creating tight, heavily wooded corridors that demand accuracy off the tee. It plays as a genuine test for the region's public golfers, not a pushover, and has developed a loyal following among Northern Virginia residents who want a serious round without the private-club price tag.
Triangle sits just south of Quantico along I-95, in the broad coastal plain where the piedmont begins to flatten toward the Potomac basin. The surrounding landscape is dense second-growth forest, and the course blends into it seamlessly — you're largely shielded from the suburban sprawl that defines much of this corridor.
For a county-run facility, Forest Greens punches well above its weight. The routing makes strong use of elevation change and the tree-lined terrain, and the greens have a reputation for being consistently well-maintained. It fills a genuine gap in a region where quality public golf is harder to find than it should be.
