Few public courses in the Chicago suburbs carry the weight of history that The Glen Club does. The course was built on the grounds of the former Glenview Naval Air Station, a World War II-era base that closed in 1995 and was redeveloped into a mixed-use community called The Glen. Tom Fazio designed the layout, which opened in 2002, and he made imaginative use of the repurposed land — the old runways, hangars, and infrastructure informed the grading and shaping of a course that feels far more dramatic than its flat suburban address might suggest.
Fazio's routing is known for its wide, generous fairways offset by significant bunkering and strategic demands around the greens — a design that rewards thoughtful play more than raw power. The course has hosted major amateur events and consistently ranks among the top public-access courses in Illinois, earning it a reputation well beyond the northwest suburbs.
Glenview sits about 20 miles north of downtown Chicago, and The Glen Club functions as the anchor of a walkable town-center development — an unusual setting that gives the experience a civic character most standalone golf facilities lack.
