Few golf courses in Canada carry the weight of history that St. Eugene Mission does. The resort is built around a former residential school established by the Ktunaxa Nation and the Oblates of Mary Immaculate in the late 19th century — the imposing heritage building now serves as the resort hotel, a deliberate act of reclamation and economic reconciliation by the Ktunaxa people, who own and operate the property. Playing here means engaging with a place that has meant many things to many people over more than a century.
The course itself unfolds across the Rocky Mountain Trench, the broad valley floor that runs between the Purcell and Rocky Mountain ranges outside Cranbrook. The setting delivers serious scenery — wide open skies, distant snow-capped peaks, and the kind of high-elevation light that makes the Kootenay region genuinely distinctive from spring through fall.
For British Columbia golf, this layout occupies a meaningful tier: a destination worth the drive from Calgary or Vancouver, anchored by a cultural story no purely private club or resort development could replicate.
