Few golf settings in the American Northeast carry the particular stillness of the Adirondack backcountry, and Saranac Inn Golf and Country Club sits deep within it. The club traces its origins to the early resort era of the Upper Saranac Lake region, when wealthy families from New York and Boston built grand camps along the water and golf was a natural extension of that summer life. The course dates to the late 19th century, making it one of the older layouts in New York State, and it retains the unhurried, almost timeless quality that early American golf often possessed.
The terrain here is classic Adirondack — rolling, wooded, with the kind of natural contours that designers of that era worked with rather than against. Fairways move through stands of birch and pine, and the proximity to the lake system gives the property a character that more manicured resort courses rarely achieve.
As a private members' club, Saranac Inn rewards those fortunate enough to play it with something increasingly scarce: golf that feels genuinely rooted in its place, unhurried by the demands of high daily-fee traffic.
