Boavista Golf Resort

Few stretches of the Algarve coast carry the golfing density of the western end, and Boavista Golf Resort sits squarely in that tradition. Opened in 2001 and designed by the noted Portuguese-based architect Ricardo Trent, the course wraps around a substantial residential and hotel development just outside Lagos, one of the most historically significant towns on the entire Portuguese coastline. The routing uses the rolling inland terrain of the Barlavento region rather than the dramatic clifftop scenery of nearby Ponta da Piedade, giving it a calmer, more parkland feel than the exposed ocean layouts further east near Vilamoura.

The design leans on elevation changes and strategically placed water hazards to create variety, and the mature umbrella pines and cork oaks that frame many holes give the course a genuine sense of enclosure and shade — welcome in the fierce Algarve summer heat. It plays as a resort course should: challenging enough to engage low-handicappers without punishing casual visitors.

Lagos itself rewards a longer stay. The old town's fortified walls, proximity to the wild beaches of the Costa Vicentina, and a compact, walkable centre make Boavista a natural anchor for a golf-and-travel combination rather than a standalone day trip.
