Few courses on the African continent carry a name with as much weight as this one. Eye of Africa occupies a dramatic stretch of highveld terrain south of Johannesburg, where the landscape opens into wide, sweeping vistas across the Suikerbosrand hills. The course was designed by David Leadbetter — better known globally as a teaching guru — and represents one of the more ambitious golf developments in the Gauteng region, built as the centrepiece of a large residential and lifestyle estate.
The design leans into the natural contours of the highveld plateau, with generous elevation changes, exposed rock formations, and the kind of big sky that makes every tee shot feel consequential. Water features and indigenous vegetation weave through the layout, and the combination of altitude and prevailing afternoon winds means conditions can shift quickly over a round.
Eikenhof sits roughly 30 kilometres south of Johannesburg's city centre, far enough to feel removed from the urban sprawl, close enough to draw a regular membership from across greater Gauteng. It plays as a serious test of ball-striking on a course with genuine visual drama.
