Mountain--Lakes

Rio Grande sits on Puerto Rico's northeastern coast, where the foothills of El Yunque — the only tropical rainforest in the US National Forest system — meet the Atlantic lowlands. It's a region defined by lush, dramatic terrain: dense canopy, volcanic ridgelines, and the kind of vivid green that only arrives with serious rainfall. Golf courses here don't have to work hard to feel extraordinary — the landscape does most of it on its own.

The name Mountain--Lakes suggests a layout that draws on both of the area's defining geographic features: the elevation changes and forested slopes pushing in from the rainforest interior, and the water that collects and pools across the coastal plain. If the design lives up to its name, players can expect a course that shifts in character across 18 holes, trading the demands of hillside terrain for the precision required around water hazards.

Rio Grande has long been one of the island's most golf-rich corridors, home to resort properties and courses that attract mainland visitors as well as serious local players. A round here comes with tropical heat, afternoon trade winds off the Atlantic, and scenery that puts most continental US courses at a distinct disadvantage.
