Few golf courses on earth can claim a setting quite like this one. Volcano Golf & Country Club sits at roughly 4,000 feet elevation on the slopes of Mauna Loa, inside Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island — an active volcanic landscape that is, quite literally, still being formed. The course has operated here since the 1920s, making it one of the oldest on the island, and the experience of playing it defies easy comparison.
The elevation and latitude cool things considerably from the beach resorts an hour away, and the terrain reflects its origins in lava flows. Expect tight, tree-lined fairways cut through stands of native ohia lehua trees, uneven lies where ancient lava disrupted the ground, and a rawness that no amount of grooming fully tames. Fog rolls through without warning. The air smells of sulfur on certain winds.
This is emphatically not a resort showcase course built for ego and Instagram. It is a genuine, unpretentious layout that earns its place through sheer singularity of setting — a round here is something you describe to other golfers for years.
