Chelmsford Golf Club occupies a compact, par-68 layout on the eastern fringe of Essex's county town — a format that rewards precision and local knowledge far more than raw distance. Founded in 1893, it is one of the older clubs in the region, and its relatively tight, tree-lined character reflects the parkland traditions of late-Victorian course design. The layout plays shorter than a full-length championship test, but the mature woodland that defines so many of its holes demands accuracy off the tee, and scoring well here is never as straightforward as the card might suggest.
Chelmsford itself sits at a natural crossroads for Essex golf — close enough to London to draw a commuter membership, yet firmly rooted in the quieter, greener county beyond the M25. The club has long served as a genuine hub for the local amateur game, hosting county competitions and nurturing club golfers across generations.
For visiting players, this is a traditional members' club with a well-worn, lived-in character — the kind of course where the atmosphere in the clubhouse matters as much as the 18 holes themselves.
