Γκολφ Αφάντου

Few golf courses anywhere in the Mediterranean can claim the setting that Afantou occupies — a broad coastal plain on the eastern shore of Rhodes, with the Aegean visible from much of the layout and the dry, rocky hillsides of the Dodecanese rising behind it. Γκολφ Αφάντου, commonly known as Afantou Golf Club, is Rhodes' only public golf course and one of the oldest in Greece, opened in 1973 and designed by Donald Harradine, the Swiss-based British architect responsible for dozens of courses across Europe. That heritage gives it a certain understated authority among Greek golf venues.

Harradine shaped the course to follow the natural contours of the plain, and the result is an open, links-influenced layout where wind off the Aegean is a constant and decisive factor — far more so than the yardage alone would suggest. The turf plays firm in the long dry summers, rewarding ground game and local knowledge.

Rhodes draws visitors for its medieval old town, its light, and its warmth, and Afantou fits that unhurried character well. This is not a course that tries to impress through artifice — it earns its place through honest design, a remarkable location, and the rare pleasure of playing golf on a Greek island.
