Few private clubs in the Pacific Northwest carry quite the pedigree of Semiahmoo Golf & Country Club. The course was designed by Arnold Palmer and Ed Seay, a prolific partnership responsible for layouts across North America, and it opened in the late 1980s as the centerpiece of the Semiahmoo Resort development on a stunning peninsula jutting into Semiahmoo Bay. The design works with the coastal terrain rather than against it, routing holes through stands of Douglas fir and along water's edge, with the bay and the Canadian shore forming a backdrop that few courses anywhere can match.
Blaine sits at the northernmost tip of Washington State — the Peace Arch border crossing to British Columbia is practically walking distance — which gives Semiahmoo an interesting bicultural identity. The club draws members from both sides of the border, and the surrounding landscape has the moody, green-draped quality common to the Salish Sea region: mild and misty more often than not, with the kind of soft light that makes coastal firs look almost theatrical.
As a private members' club, Semiahmoo rewards those who belong with a genuine sense of place and exclusivity that resort play rarely delivers. The course plays to a full par 72 and demands thoughtful shot-making, particularly on holes where water and tree lines compress the margin for error.
