Few private clubs in New Jersey carry the quiet prestige of Rock Spring Club. Founded in the early 20th century, it occupies the Watchung Mountain ridge in West Orange — elevated terrain that gives the course a decidedly different character from the flat coastal layouts that dominate much of the state. The land rolls and breaks in ways that demand imagination off the tee, and the mature hardwood canopy that frames nearly every hole makes it feel like a course that has earned its age.
West Orange sits just 12 miles west of Manhattan, and the club reflects that proximity — understated, serious about golf, and fiercely protective of its privacy. The surrounding Essex County landscape shifts beautifully through the seasons, and fall rounds here, with the oak and maple turning above the fairways, are genuinely memorable.
The par-71 layout is a detail worth noting: somewhere on this course, a hole was deemed not to need that extra stroke, and that kind of editorial confidence usually points to a design with real personality and teeth.
