Few courses in Ontario carry quite the reputation Whistle Bear does. This private club on the outskirts of Cambridge has established itself as one of the premier layouts in the province, regularly appearing among Canada's top-ranked courses and earning a loyal following among serious golfers who make the pilgrimage from Toronto, Hamilton, and beyond. The club takes its name from the bear that once roamed the forested land the course now occupies — a nod to the wild character the design works hard to preserve.
The layout was crafted to take full advantage of the rolling Carolinian terrain that defines this stretch of southern Ontario, with mature hardwoods framing nearly every hole and a creek system that comes into play at critical moments. The par-74 configuration is no quirk — it reflects a deliberate design philosophy that leans on 2 par 5s in unusual arrangements, rewarding intelligent course management over raw power.
Cambridge itself sits at the confluence of the Speed and Grand rivers, a city with deep manufacturing roots that has embraced its green surroundings. Whistle Bear fits the landscape well: serious, unhurried, and built to be returned to.
