Few courses wear their identity as plainly as this one. The Tomcat Course sits within the orbit of Naval Air Station Oceana, the Navy's East Coast Master Jet Base, and takes its name from the legendary F-14 Tomcat fighter aircraft — a nod to the military aviation culture that defines this corner of Virginia Beach. That connection to the base gives the course a distinct atmosphere you won't find at a civilian club: the occasional roar of a jet overhead is part of the soundtrack here, not a distraction.
Virginia Beach occupies a flat, sandy coastal plain where the land is low, the vegetation tends toward scrubby pines and coastal hardwoods, and the Atlantic wind can quietly dismantle a round that looks straightforward on paper. Courses in this part of Hampton Roads play longer and trickier than they appear when the sea breeze picks up.
As a military-affiliated facility, the Tomcat Course serves an active-duty and veteran community, offering accessible, no-frills golf in a setting that carries genuine local meaning.
