Few American golf clubs carry a backstory quite like Hershey Country Club's. The club owes its existence to Milton S. Hershey, the chocolate magnate who essentially built an entire town around his factory in the early 20th century — and considered a world-class golf club a civic amenity as natural as a trolley line or a public park. The East Course, designed by Maurice McCarthy and later refined by the great George Fazio, has long been considered one of Pennsylvania's finest private layouts, a rolling, tree-lined test that rewards strategic thinking over raw power.
Hershey itself is one of those genuinely unusual American places — a company town that became a legitimate destination, home to an amusement park, a medical center, and the faint, real smell of chocolate that locals swear still drifts through the air on the right day. The golf exists within that same self-contained, purposeful world Hershey built.
The club has historically attracted strong regional competition and carries serious prestige within Pennsylvania golf. For members, it represents something beyond a round — it's participation in one of the more singular civic legacies in American sport.
