Few public courses in the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex have built a following quite like Buffalo Creek. Opened in 1993 and designed by Tom Weiskopf and Jay Morrish — the same partnership behind Troon North and other celebrated layouts — it brought genuine design pedigree to what was then a fast-growing suburb east of Dallas. The course carved through the rolling terrain along the Lake Ray Hubbard shoreline, using natural elevation changes and native grasses to create a feel distinctly unlike the flat, manicured parkland designs that dominate much of North Texas. It has consistently ranked among the top public-access courses in the state.
Rockwall sits on the eastern edge of the DFW sprawl, where the landscape opens up and the lake creates both visual drama and genuine wind exposure. Playing Buffalo Creek means contending with the kind of breezes that roll off open water and make club selection an honest conversation on nearly every hole.
The routing rewards strategic thinking over raw power. Weiskopf and Morrish were known for building risk-reward options into their designs rather than simply punishing length, and Buffalo Creek reflects that philosophy — there are decisions to make here, not just swings.
