West Lakes Golf Club sits on the shores of the man-made West Lakes lagoon system in Adelaide's western suburbs, a setting that gives the course a distinctly maritime character uncommon in Australian parkland golf. The surrounding water and coastal scrub create a layout where the breeze off the lake is a constant factor — what plays as a comfortable iron into the green in still conditions can become a genuine test of club selection when the sea air kicks in from the west.
The West Lakes area itself is a planned residential and marina precinct developed from the 1970s, and the golf club reflects that era's ambition to build genuine leisure amenity into the suburb's fabric. Adelaide's sandbelt tradition is strong, but West Lakes offers something different — a flatter, water-influenced layout more reminiscent of coastal courses found further afield.
At par 70, the card runs shorter than a traditional championship layout, placing a premium on precision over power. Members and visitors who underestimate it on paper tend to find the lake exposure has other ideas.
