Few courses in the Houston exurbs carry the architectural pedigree that Woodforest Golf Club brings to Montgomery. The course was designed by Steve Elkington and Rod Whitman — an unusual and compelling pairing of a major champion with one of golf's most thoughtful minimalist architects. Whitman, a disciple of the late Bill Coore, brings a routing philosophy rooted in ground game and naturalness, and that sensibility shows in how the land shapes play rather than the other way around.
Montgomery sits in the Sam Houston National Forest region, roughly an hour north of Houston, where the Texas Hill Country begins giving way to East Texas pines. That transition shows up in the landscape: rolling terrain, sandy soils, and a canopy of loblolly pines that frame holes and tighten margins. The setting feels genuinely removed from the suburban sprawl to the south.
The par-71 layout is part of a broader master-planned residential community, but the golf product punches well above the typical amenity-course standard. It has drawn serious regional attention since opening and rewards players who work the ball along the ground.
