Bellata Golf Course

Bellata sits in the flat, dry farming country of northwest New South Wales, a small agricultural village on the Newell Highway between Narrabri and Moree. This is wheat and cotton territory, where the black soil plains stretch to a wide horizon and the light has a particular clarity that makes distances hard to judge. Golf out here is community sport in its truest form — the club a social anchor for the district as much as a sporting facility.

Like most outback and rural NSW courses of its type, Bellata almost certainly plays on dirt or "browns" rather than grass greens, a format born of necessity in a region where water is precious and rainfall unreliable. Scrapes, or sand greens, demand their own putting technique — players carry a drag mat to smooth the brown before putting — and learning to read them is part of the local education.

The golf here won't challenge a tour player, but that's beside the point. A round at Bellata is a window into a distinctly Australian version of the game, where a cold drink at the clubhouse after, and the conversation that comes with it, matter just as much as the scorecard.
