Alto sits at elevation in the Sacramento Mountains of southern New Mexico, just a short drive from Ruidoso in Lincoln County — a region better known for horse racing at Ruidoso Downs and cool summer escapes from the surrounding desert than for golf. At roughly 6,900 feet above sea level, the air is thin enough that the ball travels noticeably farther than it would at sea level, and the ponderosa pines that define this part of the mountains give the landscape a distinctly different character from the scrubby desert terrain most people associate with New Mexico.
Rainmakers is a full 18-hole, par-72 layout operating in that mountain resort context — the kind of course that draws vacationers and second-home owners from Albuquerque, El Paso, and West Texas looking for relief from summer heat. The altitude and the tree-lined setting combine to make rounds feel genuinely removed from the lowlands.
Beyond the specific layout, what defines playing golf up here is simply the environment: afternoon thunderstorms roll through in summer (the name fits the region's monsoon season well), temperatures stay mild when the rest of the Southwest bakes, and the whole experience carries the relaxed rhythm of a mountain retreat.
