Few courses in the Phoenix metro lean as fully into the Sonoran Desert as The Legend at Arrowhead. Designed by Arnold Palmer and Ed Seay and opened in 1986, it was one of the early standard-bearers for desert-style architecture in the West Valley — a layout where saguaro cactus, rocky outcroppings, and sandy washes aren't just scenery but active hazards. Miss a fairway here and you're not in rough; you're in the desert. The course rewards players who pick their lines off the tee and accept that the landscape itself is the defense.
Arrowhead Ranch, the master-planned community surrounding the course, developed rapidly through the late 1980s and '90s, and The Legend grew into something of a neighborhood anchor. It carries a semi-private feel, though it operates with public access, and the conditions have long drawn locals who want a more serious test than the typical resort track.
Glendale sits in the northwest corner of the Valley of the Sun, where summer heat is genuine and unforgiving — early morning rounds are a near-religious ritual from May through September. The rest of the year, this stretch of the desert plays under some of the best golf weather in the country.
